The history of snowboarding spans the last 35 years.Tom Sims in 1963 made a snowboard out of plywood and called it a ski board. Another snowboard inventor is Sherman Poppen. In 1965 Poppen designed a snowboard called a snurfer. He put two skis together and attached a rope to help the rider keep his or her balance and steer. But the main snowboard was developed in 1976 by a man called Jake Burton Carpenter. Jake Burton added bindings to his fiberglass model. Soon after that he added edges to the board and also high back bindings.

If you have never snowboarded before and are looking for the perfect guide before you hit the slopes. Chris Kohut takes you through everything you need to know in his book Snowboarding For Beginners.

Every year the snowboarding becomes more popular. In 1996 there were only two million snowboarders. I 2000 there was four million snowboarders. And it is widely predicted that snowboarding will become more popular than skiing by the year 2015. At first most ski resorts frowned on snowboarding but now nearly all apart from a small majority welcome snowboarders.
